My campaign to serve on the Charleston County School Board District 1 advocates for Students First; Good Governance Always. I'm running for the school board because our schools work best when decisions are driven by students, educators and evidence - not ideology. I've been following the school board for the last three years and advocating for good governance. My campaign developed from wanting more for our students, including my grandchildren who attend CCSD schools. My focus is simple: elevate good governance and accountability at the board level, improve transparency and communication by the board with parents, families and all interested constituents, reduce political impact in classrooms, and prepare our district for an uncertain future shaped by funding pressures, technology, and policy changes at the state and federal level. School board service isn't about headlines or culture wars. It's about stewardship, trust and long-term responsibility to our students and our community.
Our district has made progress in the last several years under the leadership of Superintendent Huggins. Our administrators and all of our educators need our support and backing as they prioritize the learning needs of our students and address complex concerns. The district needs to continue its progress strengthening our schools and our student success. By setting clear performance expectations, asking good questions and supporting the work of the district, the board contributes to its success.
Good governance incorporates: - collaborative decision-making bringing out the best ideas and respectfully integrating insights - transparent processes and decision making build trust, because everyone is aware of how decisions are reached and what was considered - engaging with the community to understand their concerns and priorities - responsible execution of fiduciary responsibilities by setting meaningful goals and guardrails, performing due diligence to make decisions, critically evaluating finances and being well informed regarding emerging issues and risks. This means the board should work together for the best for our students, schools and educators with respectful processes and no hidden agendas.
